Born 21 December 1942 in The Hague, The Netherlands, grew up in Medan, Indonesia. Married to Elisabeth Hillen; three children.
Studied at the Universities of Leiden (1966, Master of Law), London School of Economics (Labor Economics) and The Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania (1969, Masters Degree in Finance and Business Administration).
